More games were halted in basketball, baseball and hockey, and the messages from athletes reverberated beyond the sports world. Credit... Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images Published Aug. 27, 2020 Updated Sept. 4, 2020 LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — George Hill is hardly the biggest star in professional basketball. But he was the one who took the lead when a handful of players on the Milwaukee Bucks began talking about the police shooting of Jacob Blake a few days earlier in Wisconsin. The players, led by Hill, implored their teammates not to play in their playoff game on Wednesday, believing they had a responsibility to make a statement about the how the police treat Black people. What they envisioned — a one game, on-the-fly protest — instead inspired one of the broadest political statements across sports leagues that the United States had ever seen: walkouts involving hundreds of athletes in professional men's and women's basketball, baseball and soccer, as well as one of the world's biggest tennis stars.
Changes WILL come. " Playoff hockey games that were scheduled for Thursday and Friday were also postponed. It was not always clear how long the various teams and players would keep their sports activities on pause. Four baseball teams that had protested on Wednesday resumed play on Thursday, and Naomi Osaka, a Black woman who has won two Grand Slam titles, said she would play in the Western & Southern Open's semifinals on Friday. Osaka had planned to quit the tournament because there were "more important matters at hand, " but she relented after tennis officials agreed to delay matches by a day. By the end of Thursday, some in sports said they were already turning to political action beyond demonstrations. Mike Krzyzewski, the men's basketball coach at Duke, told a rally of athletes that his players would register to vote later in the day. "This thing can be won, and your generation is the generation that's going to do it, " he said without endorsing any particular candidate. "I grew up a long time ago in the '60s.
"They want to have access to these cleaner cars because of the need for improved air quality and to address the climate crisis. " In the U. S., the transportation industry is responsible for 28 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions, the largest share of any sector. The Trump administration revoked a waiver allowing California to set its own standard, issuing a rule in 2019 that gave the federal government the sole authority to set emissions standards. The rule has been challenged in court, though litigation is currently paused until further notice following a request from the Biden administration. In its request, the administration cited "the prerogative of the executive branch to reconsider the policy decisions of a prior Administration, " indicating that it may reverse the Trump position in court. Administration officials have separately identified the rule as one of dozens they would seek to review, and if it's not struck down in court, the administration could still reverse course through the regulatory process.
Moore, the subject of an ITV documentary at 8pm on Friday, fought in Burma. "It's a very special day that is celebrating the end of a very fearsome war in Europe, " he told ITV's Good Morning. VE Day was a "very, very happy day", he recalled. But, despite the war ending in Europe, his comrades in Burma fought on. "My thoughts were with them because although there were great celebrations here, all my comrades were still fighting in Burma with the Japanese. "
2 million legal immigrants are admitted every year and can become naturalized citizens after five years of residency — is overwhelmingly favorable to Democrats. The Washington Post, New York Times, The Atlantic, Axios, the Los Angeles Times, and the Wall Street Journal have all acknowledged the trend. "The single biggest threat to Republicans' long-term viability is demographics, " Axios reported last year. "The numbers simply do not lie … there's not a single demographic megatrend that favors Republicans. " Today, the foreign-born population has jumped to nearly 14 percent and the total of foreign workers in the American economy has hit the highest level since 1996. With no reductions to legal immigration levels, the U. S. is set to import about 15 million new foreign-born voters by 2040. Those 15 million new foreign-born voters include about eight million who will have arrived through the process known as "chain migration, " where newly naturalized citizens can sponsor an unlimited number of foreign relatives for green cards.

Earlier, the Red Arrows streamed red, white and blue as they roared over central London, passing above the Mall, now deserted but which was to have been packed with thousands for a veterans' parade and joyful reunions with old comrades. RAF Typhoon jets performed flypasts over Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast at the same time. A Spitfire flypast soared over the white cliffs of Dover. 00:53 Red Arrows fly over London to mark 75th anniversary of VE Day - video Footage of Churchill's radio address was broadcast at 3pm, while Royal Navy warships and support vessels blasted their sirens for a minute to celebrate victory, marking the hour of the address 75 years ago. There followed the Nation's Toast, "To those who gave so much, we thank you. "

Britain paid tribute to the second world war generation with flypasts, a two-minute silence, and the broadcast of Winston Churchill's historic speech to mark the 75th anniversary of victory in Europe. On a unique day of reflection and celebration, the Prince of Wales led the national moment of remembrance, as people stood with heads bowed on doorsteps and in gardens, and wreaths were laid at war memorials during small, physically distanced ceremonies. Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall paid their respects in Scotland at the Balmoral war memorial, as a lone piper played. Charles, in highland dress, laid a wreath. The duchess, wearing the 4 Rifles dress and the regimental brooch of her father's regiment, the 12th Royal Lancers, placed spring flowers she had picked from their garden at their nearby Birkhall home. A cannon fired from Edinburgh castle began and ended the silence. D-Day veteran Don Sheppard, who celebrated his 100th birthday this week, commemorates the 75th anniversary of VE Day at his Basildon home.
Prosecutors could be given the power to direct police investigations under plans for a "once in a generation" overhaul of the criminal justice system. Boris Johnson has committed to establishing a royal commission on the criminal justice process, to be launched as soon as next month. The Times has been told that the commission will examine the procurator fiscal model in Scotland, in which prosecutors have the power to direct police investigations into serious crimes. Prosecutors have similar powers in France. It comes amid warnings that the criminal justice system in England and Wales is "at breaking point" after a decade of cuts, with sharp falls in convictions for rape, robberies involving the use of knives, theft and fraud. The fall in convictions is
